The number of melanoma cases among young women in the U.S. has risen fast, said the National Cancer Institute`s Division of Cancer Epidemiology & Genetics as quoted by media reports Monday.
Researchers from the institute looked over more than 20,000 cases of melanoma in young adults aged 15 to 49 from 1973 to 2004.
The results show the number of melanoma cases among the subjects has risen by 50 percent since the year 1980, they said.
Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, and the increase is being attributed to the increased use of tanning salons by younger women.
The new findings prove that relevant programs for the time being have failed to educate Americans about the risks associated with indoor and outdoor tanning, the researchers added.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed every year.
