Gum disease has been linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes and stroke, writes Michael Kelly WHILE MOST men would appreciate that good oral health is important for maintaining impeccably fresh breath and a pearly-white smile, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that oral health is far more important than that. Researchers are now focusing on the connection between oral and general health and suggesting that this connection may in fact be a two-way street.

Indian Dental Association Kollam branch and Colgate will jointly organise a district-level school dental health programme at Govt Town UP School here on Wednesday. Indian Dental Association president Sulfikar Ali said that Mayor N.Padmalochanan would inaugurate the programme at 1 p.m. The district-level programme is being held as part of the National Oral Health Programme, he said.

A new study shows a year after a traumatic injury, more than 20% of patients suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, and around 6% experience depression. These individuals are also less likely to return to work in the year after their injury. Researchers say these findings point to the need for more attention to the mental state of patients in acute care facilities.

The tent-like structure - complete with dentist chair, X-ray machines and hi-tech equipment - will travel the length of the UK, visiting cities including London, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow. The £25,000 mobile surgery will offer consultations and X-rays and be staffed by a mix of Hungarian and German dentists who are in the UK to explain the service they provide in Hungary.

CHRONICALLY ill patients who are desperate to get expensive dental care under a popular Medicare scheme before it is shut down may get a reprieve. The scheme, introduced last November, provides up to $4250 in benefits for operations and dentures and has financed more than 100,000 services a month.

A new drug candidate, called PBT2, has now been discovered to effectively treat Alzheimer's disease, and improve cognitive function. Researchers from Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria in Australia have identified compounds that could stimulate rapid improvement in cognitive function in mice with Alzheimer's disease.

You might be willing to get attractive and decorative braces for your teeth, but a new study has revealed that less attractive the braces are, the more effective they will be. Dental appliances with no visible metal were considered the most attractive, and ceramic brackets with clear or white wires were considered more attractive than ceramic brackets with metal wires However, it's the unattractive braces that remain the best.

Low vitamin D levels during pregnancy may affect the newborn's primary tooth calcification, a risk factor in neonatal tooth decay. University of Manitoba investigators presented the results of a study to determine the vitamin D status of pregnant women, the incidence of enamel defects and early-childhood tooth decay among their infants. Two hundred and six pregnant women in their second trimester participated in the study.

A team of researchers, including an Indian scientist, has found that blue curing light used to harden dental fillings may stunt tumour growth as well. The findings are based on a study of 10 tumour-bearing mice, five treated with the light and five untreated. "The light sends wavelengths of blue-violet light to the composite, which triggers hardening," says Alpesh Patel, a rising MCG School of Dentistry junior.
