Men, too, should worry about their bone health
Posted on Mar 31 2008 1:53 AM by adeal

Hip and spine fractures are among the most common disabling injuries of the elderly. But because they are more common in women, strategies to prevent them are rarely directed at men. "We've figured out what to do with women, but men have been largely ignored," says Dr. Angela Shepherd of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. That's starting to change as more men live longer and find their lives changed for the worse after breaking a bone. Shepherd recently published a system doctors can use to identify men at risk of osteoporosis, a weakening of the bones that raises the risk of fractures.

A new high-performance bandage made from the same blood-stopping technology the U.S. Army uses to save lives on the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq is now available to the public through drugstore.com.

Weight loss can help in stopping snoring
Posted on Jan 31 2008 1:31 AM by Asif

: Most men deny they snore. If they admit to it they’ll probably say ’it doesn’t bother me, it’s not doing me any harm’. What they may not realize is that it might be. Over three and a half million people snore. Four out of ten men and up to three out of ten women. Millions of partners and neighbours suffer sleep disturbed nights too. The noise of snoring is caused by parts of the nose and throat, in particular the soft palate, vibrating as you breath in and out. At night, muscles that help keep your airways open relax and become floppy, the airways narrow, vibrate more, so snoring is more likely. Alcohol and also sleeping tablets relax these muscles more and being overweight puts pressure on the airways.

Hair loss can cause anxiety in men
Posted on Jan 31 2008 1:28 AM by Asif

Hair loss is probably the one thing that causes men more anxiety than anything else in their life. Receding hairlines and the arrival of the bald patch are feared by men around the globe. Not even the efforts of superstars such as Bruce Willis and Andre Agassi to make baldness fashionable have succeeded in releasing men from this inherent terror.Hair may start to disappear from the temples and the crown of the head at any time. For some men this process starts as early as the later teenage years, for most it happens in the later 20’s and early 30’s. Initially it may just be a little thinning that’s noticed. Then, the absence of hair allows more of the scalp to become visible.

When dad should stop driving
Posted on Jan 30 2008 3:15 AM by Asif

Marion Somers may be an expert on caring for elderly people, but that didn't mean it was a cinch persuading her father to quit driving. "It was one of the most serious and complicated issues that I've had to deal with," says Somers, author of "Elder Care Made Easier."
Taking the keys away from an aging parent means navigating tricky issues of independence and role reversal. But the decision is too serious to ignore.
Drivers over 75 have the second-highest rate, after teenagers, of fatal crashes per mile driven, according to Federal Highway Administration data from 2001.
Dan Mankin of Sun Valley, Idaho, says that his father, who lived in Santa Barbara, California, before he died at age 83, took it personally when Mankin took the car. "It hurt us all to see him so angry," says Mankin, "but the consequences could have been so horrendous."

Probe: FEMA sugarcoated danger of hurricane trailers
Posted on Jan 30 2008 3:14 AM by Asif

The Federal Emergency Management Agency manipulated scientific research to play down the danger posed by formaldehyde in trailers issued to hurricane victims, according to an investigation by congressional Democrats. FEMA "ignored, hid and manipulated government research on the potential impact of long-term exposure to formaldehyde" on Katrina and Rita victims now living in FEMA trailers, said a letter written by Democrats on Monday. Democrats on a House Science and Technology subcommittee wrote the letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. FEMA is part of the Homeland Security Department. In a separate letter, lawmakers said the federal health agency that provided guidance to FEMA was "complicit in giving FEMA precisely what they wanted."

'Don't fight in front of the kids' and other advice you can ignore
Posted on Jan 30 2008 3:12 AM by Asif

The world is full of advice for married couples, newlyweds or not -- some of it commonsensical, most of it well-intentioned, and much of it wrong. In the 14 years we've been married, my husband and I have broken all the rules at least once -- and when I copped to friends, most of them gleefully admitted they'd done the same. So I asked them to go on the record as we figured out the biggest myths about marriage. With the help of a few experts (themselves veterans of long, kid-filled relationships), we've decoded what bits of conventional wisdom are worth tossing -- and what are worth tweaking -- from the suggestions we've all heard since walking down the aisle.

The Sex of Your Surgeon May Matter

Whether a woman receives radiation treatment after breast cancer surgery may be influenced by the gender of her surgeon, according to a new report from The Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The study, from researchers at Columbia University, set out to determine why breast cancer treatment still varies among similar patients. In particular, they looked at radiation treatment given to women after lumpectomy. The treatment is considered a standard of quality cancer care and has been shown to reduce breast cancer recurrence and mortality. However, many women still don’t receive it.

5 Problems With Feet That Men Shouldn't Walk Away From
Posted on Jan 15 2008 1:52 AM by Asif

Many men don't bother to see a doctor when they have foot troubles, but there are five foot problems they should never ignore, says the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons:

* Heel pain. This is often caused by tissue inflammation but can also result from a broken bone, a tight Achilles tendon, a pinched nerve, or other problem.
* Ankle sprains. They always require prompt medical attention. Skipping medical care increases the likelihood of repeated ankle sprains and the development of chronic ankle instability.

International Teen Sex Survey

England has the highest percentage of sexually experienced 15-year-olds in Europe and Canada, a 24-nation survey shows.

Emmanuelle Godeau, MD, PhD, of the University of Toulouse, France, and colleagues asked some 34,000 15-year-olds about their sexual activities as part of a youth health survey. They collected the data in 2002 from students in 23 European countries and Canada.

Generally speaking, 15-year-olds from Western Europe were more likely to report sexual intercourse than those in Eastern Europe. When they did, they also were more likely to report use of effective birth control -- either oral contraceptives or condoms.

Previous studies have shown that circumcision may curb men's risk of contracting HIV by half, and, if widely practiced in Africa, might prevent 3 million deaths over 20 years.

Now, in the new Ugandan study, few men -- circumcised or not -- reported sexual problems.
